Jackie O. Pillbox is the creation of Squirrel Nut Zippers founding member Don Raleigh, who brought the group together in November 2001 to record his original compositions. The combo is filling up their schedule for a fall and winter east coast tour. The slinky poetic jazz-pop of Jackie O. Pillbox is poised to release its debut CD, Sing Along with Jackie O. Pillbox, on September 1. Just a glance at the list of musicians who perform on this compact disc should give ample assurance that the music is well-played.
Don Raleigh: Guitar, Mouse Piano
Don Raleigh was a founding member of Squirrel Nut Zippers and has written music for Dr. John in the Miramax film, Flirting with Disaster. He has played with Jim Smith, The Loose Lunatics, and The Rock Mechanics. The inspiration for Don's music comes from his many travels around the world.
Mark Simonsen: Guitar, Vibes, Marimba, Percussion, Piano
Mark Simonsen is a veteran Chapel Hill musician who has recorded and performed with Flyin' Mice, Wake, Kismet, Plus Ultra, The Whole Tribe Sings, Patio Kings, Portastatic, Tom Maxwell's Minor Drag, Micro-East Collective, and The Last of the Great Side Show Freaks. He has toured internationally as a singer-songwriter and is also involved in professional regional theater productions.
Katherine Rogers: Vocals
Sing Along with Jackie O Pillbox is Katherine Rogers recording debut. Having performed professionally in theater since the age of eight, she toured the US in North Carolina Theatre's The Diary of Anne Frank in the lead role. Katherine has appeared in over fifty productions locally as well as in Russia and France. She also originated the role of Katherine in Good Ol' Girls in Chapel Hill, Raleigh and New York City.
Corey Sims: Trumpet
Corey has recorded with Caitlin Cary, LUD, Mayflies USA, and Alejandro Escovedo. He has also played with Tift Merritt, Patio Kings, Micro-East Collective, Judy Woodall's Mule Train, Guilty Pleasures, Taz Halloween, Tim Stambaugh, Adelaide's Farm Band, Jonathan Byrd and Steven Michael Jack. Corey has also performed as a solo artist, under the name Hubcap Sims, doing New Orleans style piano.
Nathan Logan: Trap Set & Percussion
Voted Best Drummer in the Triangle in The Independent's 1999 reader poll, Nathan has played with the area's finest talent, including Betsy in the Gene Pool, Trailer Bride, Micro East Collective, Taz Halloween, and David Spencer. Nathan also makes short films.
