A Wise Old Owl

A wise old owl lived in an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard;
Why can't we all be like that bird?

by Edward Hersey Richards

Cooking at the Store - and Holly Tree Edu-Tainment!

Mark your Calenders! For an Evening of Holly Tree Edu-tainment! Door Prizes and more! Monday, June 16th (6:30 pm)

Join us for an interesting evening with NC Field Representative of American Forests, Guy Meilleur, who will be presenting a powerpoint presentation on "The National Register of Big Trees" and another titled, "From Gray to Green," which focuses on the value of tree canopy in developing areas like Chatham County! Also--there will be door prizes of five locally adapted trees! Presentation will break and allow time for questions and comments.

Across the street from the General Store Cafe, stands the nations oldest living Holly Tree. This old and grand tree, which has graced the center of Pittsboro for so many decades, is in desperate need of some care. For years its root system has been smothered by asphalt, struggling to provide the water and nutrients that its branches need to live. That struggle has not been successful; the top of the tree is dead. With community support and assistance, this tree can be saved. Donations to save our oldest Holly Tree are being accepted by the General Store Cafe. Please send donations for the Holly Tree to "Holly Tree Rescue" c/o General Store Caf?, PO BOX 1651, Pittsboro, NC

Hey! What?s Cooking at the General Store?

Among the many signature items of the General Store Caf? - music series, the Green Chili Burrito, and the sun filled dining fa?ade - our food continues to be one of our trademarks. Our menu is known for its quality, its diverse selection, and of course the delicious taste. Carrying on this tradition is our new chef, Daphne Lagasse, who has presented some fine tantalizing dishes over the short few months since she joined us in April.

Daphne Lagasse, formerly of Nomadic Catering Company, brings some incredible experience from both the restaurant and catering worlds. She uses her vast experience to create formidable dishes both for the restaurant, and for our catered events.Combining Daphne's catering background with the General Store?s name and contacts, we hope to forge a union that provides a delicious dine-in and catering experience for all our customers.

Daphne is no stranger to the General Store. She originally came on board a couple of years ago and worked with previous owners Richard and Beckett McGough when they introduced evening dining. At that time, this new dinner offerings had not yet captured the interest of the community, and the store was unable to support the lovely gourmet dinners Daphne was preparing. Undaunted, Daphne continued to develop her love of food and cooking as a Line Cook at The Grill in Glenn Lennox and later as the Sous Chef at the fine restaurant, Provence. Ready for a new challenge, Daphne has now returned to Pittsboro and is excited about the possibilities of working with the General Store Caf?, which she sees as an outlet for her creativity.

Originally from Vermont, Daphne moved to North Carolina nine years ago, and has lived in Chapel Hill ever since. Having an interest in culinary arts, it was second nature to Daphne to spend her afternoons experimenting with new dishes. She didn?t realize she had a knack for cooking until she found that when she grocery shopped, she always bought enough to feed a small army (which her friends took advantage of, by often dropping by around dinner time at her home).

The General Store Caf? is proud to have Daphne on our team and we invite you to enjoy some of her delicious cooking. Her diverse catering menu includes such mouth-watering dishes as herb garlic crusted tenderloin, thyme marinated porkloin with roasted red pepper basil sauce, and delicious spinach ricotta toasted pecan stuffed mushrooms and more!

Catering is available for any occasion ? such as breakfast platters, corporate lunch platters, Hors D? Oeuvres, dinner entrees for casual get togethers and full dinners for formal events. Please contact Daphne at for more information.

Next Tuesday - June 10, 7:00pm - Enjoy a delightful evening of "Jazz, Blues and More" with Shelley Higgins and Tony Godwin (for the whole family)!

Tony Godwin and vocalist Shelley Higgins bring the intimacy of the duo setting to a broad repertoire that is accessible yet extraordinary... you'll hear tunes from the Beatles, Cole Porter, Ernestine Anderson, Dizzy Gillespie, India Arie, Bonnie Raitt, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Norah Jones, and more. The sound is sensual, elegant, bluesy and funky, sometimes intense, always engaging... just two musicians, a lot of music to listen to. Come and enjoy with the whole family!

White Buffalo Spirit Stick Raffle! Only $1.00

A Spirit Stick designed by White Buffalo Spirit is up for Raffle!

Up for raffle is a spirit stick designed by Michael McCormick, otherwise known as White Buffalo Spirit currently being showcased at the General Store Caf?. The decoration of each stick is detailed and individually unique, painted with bright colors, some decorated with beads, feathers, and attached bells. Proceeds from the raffle will support Michael's medical and art bills as he suffers from the rare neurological disorder, Olivio Ponto Cerebellar Atrophy. Because the disease affects the left side of the brain, the right side of the brain which is responsible for creativity has allowed McCormick to use this creative capacity for painting, crafting, and writing.

He sells what he calls, "functional art," embodied in the spirit sticks he crafts, at Gallery 18 and the General Store Cafe. In addition to creating his artworks, McCormick devotes much of his time volunteering to 11 local humanitarian organizations. Michael explains his drive to volunteer is motivated by his love of Pittsboro. He explains, "all the volunteering I do is a way to repay this community. It?s also a lot of fun."

So, buy a raffle ticket and get the chance to win a unique White Buffalo spirit stick while supporting this talented and generous member of Chatham County! Raffle tickets are $1.00 each, or buy 11 for $10.00. Raffle tickets are available for sale at the counter of the General Store Caf?. The drawing will be held on June 21st at the Chatham Art?s ClydeFest.

This Week's EVENING ENTERTAINMENT!

Thursday, June 5 - Tarheel Jazz Q-tet (Latin Jazz, BeBop, Swing), 8:00pm

Sometimes a trio, sometimes a quartet, sometimes a quintet, TJQ plays soulful, sophisticated, swingin' jazz. Featuring Rick McDuffie on guitar and vocals, bandleader Guy Percy on Upright acoustic bass, Faith McDuffie on vocals , Matthew "Zip" Irvin on Alto and tenor sax, and Clarinet Mark Dunn on Drums.

Friday, June 6- Roman Candle (Rock n Roll)

Roman Candle is a rock and roll band comprised of brothers Logan and Skip Matheny

from Chapel Hill. However, the music that these two brothers have been putting out for the last few years, whether in the bars of Chapel Hill, or in their N.C. basement studio does not neatly match any conventional notion of what "rock and roll" sounds like. Much less does it match any other tidy category.

Like fellow North Carolina native, Ryan Adams of Whiskeytown, Skip Matheny's lyrics always establish a real sense of place and mystery for the listener. He's able to depict distinct places and characters that could either be a thousand miles away, fifty years past, or right next door, so even without knowing where the band is from or what places made them write these songs, you already have a sense you've been there yourself.

RollingStone's Feb 20th article on "Bands on the rise," notes: ""Roman Candle has all the catchy hooks and volume of vintage Cheap Trick, but the power-pop tag doesn't really describe Roman Candle's heartfelt lyrics or its soulful delivery, which is much closer to Ryan Adams than to the Knack. Combine the power-pop chops and the singer-songwriter delivery and you have a sound that is not only ready made for college radio, but also helped Roman Candle find a place for itself within the legendary Chapel Hill music scene."

Saturday, June 7- Open Irish Jam Session (Irish Folk)

Meet... Mika

Mika is a dainty, petite kitten who instantly starts purring when touched. Just 8-9 months old, this precious gray and white fluffball is an extremely affectionate, gentle, and calm girl who seeks out a lap at every opportunity. Mika so loves to have her chin and face scratched that she will help you by steadying your hand with her paw, all the while rubbing her face in your hand. This sweet girl has luminescent gold-green eyes that are as big as saucers, which she uses to gaze intently at you, and when spoken to, she responds with a melodious meow. Mika believes she is the queen of the house, strutting across the floor with her fluffy plume of a tail held high. She is very well-behaved and litter box trained, FeLV/FIV negative, vaccinated and spayed. For adoption, contact C.A.R.E. at www.chathamanimalrescue.org or call 542-5757.

Chatham Shelter Spotlight (on behalf of the Chatham County Animal Shelter)

If you have been thinking about bringing a young kitten into your home, please consider a visit to the Chatham County Animal Shelter on Landfill Rd. Pittsboro. Homes are so urgently needed for all of these animals, therefore, we chose not to highlight a specific animal this week. For adoption, visit CCAS or contact them at 542-7203.
