NEW: General Store Caf? Featured Artist: Tamera Mulinix - metal sculpture!
The General Store Caf? is pleased to announce that we will prominently feature some great local artists this fall. The talented Tamera Mulinix, our featured artist this month, comes from a family of welders, and has studied welding and blacksmithing with John Amara at CCCC for about a year. Over this past year she has continued to learn and explore on her own. Currently, samples of Tamera Mulinix's metal sculptures adorn our walls and are prominently featured throughout the store. Please come admire her works! These are definitely some eye-catching sculptures! More about Tamera: "I have always danced to my own rhythms and have often felt more "unique" than I wanted to be. This was difficult to accept as an adolescent, but I have begun to appreciate, and even celebrate, seeing the world through these eyes. I have developed the courage to see what I see and like what I like without worrying about what others will say. Metal is such a strong medium and it is very empowering to manipulate it as I please. My goal, whether I start out that way or not, is always to breathe life into cold, hard, lifeless steel. My favorite pieces are those that seem to dance or flow. I long to wield the alchemists touch and transform the uninteresting into true art. Metalsmithing for me is like poetry for some people. The designs express my emotions and offer the world a glimpse of my inner self. " (If you would like your artwork to be showcased at the General Store Caf?, please contact Vance or Joyce at Joyce@generalstorecafe or [email protected] ) Share your literary talents with your fellow "Pittsburians"! - All Ages Welcome! In keeping with the characteristics of a General Store, it is our hope that this newsletter can expand to showcase the literary talents of our local community. Perhaps you have a poem, or a thanksgiving blessing that we can share? Please submit any poems, comic strips, short stories, commentaries, etc. that you would like to share to . Literary pieces may be included on the newsletter and the upcoming GeneralStoreCafe.com website. Come in and Experience Our Local Specialty Food Items for Sale!

Wednesday, November 13 - Tommy Edwards and Friends (see above - Burrito Bash) Thursday, November 14 - Blue Combo "Blue Combo has appeared on stage with the likes of Little Richard, BB King, and Buddy Guy among others. Steeped in the tradition of the genre, Blue Combo, brings their fresh approach to jump blues, soul, swing, jazz, and funk." www.bluecombo.comIt's been over 4 months since the jazz trio Blue Combo has played at the General Store, but if you caught any of their past performances you'll remember that Blue Combo goes beyond rehashing jazz standards. You'll hear Blue Combo play jazz standards, for sure, but don't be surprised if you hear tunes from the songbooks of Pat Metheny, Patsy Cline, Charlie Haden, or even the BeeGees. If Bernie is feeling particularly feisty, you may even hear a Wes Montgomery tune segue into a blazing Jimi Hendrix number. This incredibly talented trio includes Bernie Petteway on guitar, Ed butler on drums, and Rick Lassiter on double bass. Friday, November 15 - Kenny Shore If you're looking for psycho-folkabilly with a Southern Fried Heywood Banksian twist, why, you've come to the right place!Saturday, November 16 - Off the Road Band The Off the Road Band is exactly that, traveling the side tracks and byways of American music-a unique blend of many styles, including blues, bluegrass, jugband and good old rock and roll. And though you might occasionally hear an unusual arrangement of a classic tune, most of the band's offerings are its own original compositions.Based in Chapel Hill/Pittsboro, NC, the sextet is made up of Don Johnson on rhythm guitar, Dave Haynes on drums, Bill Joyner on banjo, Betsy Clarke on fiddle and percussion, Mike Chandler on electric and upright bass and Mitch Renkow on accordion and electric lead guitar. All members contribute vocally and help write songs. Founded in '96, the band has completed two CD's: Dixie Lane Detour ('98) and the band's latest offering: Catfish Moon (2001) |

Fall recipe: Grilled Potato Ratatouille Salad Create a meal using a bounty of fall vegetables The following recipe for Grilled Potato Ratatouille Salad calls for a rainbow assortment of white potatoes, purple-black eggplant, green zucchini, yellow squash, white-brown mushrooms, green and red peppers, tomatoes, onions and garlic - with a subtle bouquet of fresh herbs. This variation of a classic Mediterranean vegetable melange can be served warm, or cooled and carried out for an alfresco meal. It can accompany a main dish or, with crusty bread, can make a healthful light supper. *** GRILLED POTATO RATATOUILLE SALAD
Wash and dry all vegetables except for onions. Cut potatoes into 1-inch-thick lengthwise wedges. Steam wedges on a rack over boiling water (covered) for 10 minutes to precook potatoes. Remove potatoes from steam and pat dry with paper towels. Prepare remaining vegetables: cut eggplant lengthwise into 1-inch-thick slices; cut zucchini and yellow squash in half lengthwise; seed and quarter green and red peppers. Place potatoes and all other vegetables on baking sheets and brush with olive oil to prevent sticking during grilling. Prepare grill. When it is ready, lightly oil the grill tray. Place eggplant, squash and mushrooms on the grill crosswise so they don't fall through the grill tray. Place the tomatoes and the peppers in a wire grilling basket or on a grilling tray suitable for small foods so they don't fall through into the grill. Place garlic heads directly on grill. With the grill lid closed, grill all vegetables for 5 minutes. With tongs and a metal spatula, turn the vegetables and grill the other side, with the lid closed, for another 5 to 6 minutes. If all vegetables don't fit on the grill, cook in batches. When vegetables are cooked, arrange on a large serving platter (slice portobello mushrooms if they're large). Halve the grilled heads of garlic crosswise, and squeeze out the soft pulp into a small bowl. Whisk together the balsamic vinegar and the garlic, then pour over the vegetables. If not using garlic, just drizzle vinegar over vegetables. Sprinkle vegetables with the fresh thyme leaves or chives, if desired. Serve warm or at "picnic" temperature - no need to chill. Makes 8 servings as a side dish, 4 as a main dish. Nutritional facts per serving: 345 calories, 15 grams fat, 0 milligrams cholesterol, 90 milligrams sodium, 7 grams protein, 52 grams carbohydrates. The recipe is from Idaho Potato Commission. |
